Happy Half Term Everyone!
Wow – we can’t believe how quickly this half term has flown by! The children have been absolute stars. We’ve packed so much into the past few weeks — enjoy a well-deserved break, and we’ll see you in June.
On Monday, we welcomed two new children to enjoy their special week as the "expert in their field." In Sand Dunes classroom, Quinn taught us all about his love of superheroes and baking, and even got us all dancing to Bruno Mars – it was so much fun! In Pinewoods, Henry shared all about his brand-new puppy at home and his love of riding his ‘motorbike.’ The children were fascinated by the different features of his bike and enjoyed seeing his protective gear up close. The children really enjoy discovering each other’s interests, and we can’t wait to learn more when we return on Wednesday 4th June.
Tuesday was all about music. The children attended their first singing assembly and began learning the words to some hymns we’ll be singing in church later this year. Later in the afternoon, they learned the song "Cobbler, Cobbler, Mend My Shoe" with Mrs. Dwan. Using claves as hammers, they practised keeping a steady beat while pretending to mend shoes. It was a great hands-on music session.
The sunshine gave us the perfect opportunity to enjoy lots of learning through play outside. The children have loved exploring how water travels, using the water pump, and getting creative in the sandpit with lots of filling and pouring.
We hope the children enjoyed their first school disco on Thursday evening. It was a fantastic way to celebrate the end of the first half of the summer term.
This week we explored the number 14 – learning how it’s made up of one ten and four extra ones. The children practised their subitising skills and created bright, colourful posters all about the number 14. Over the break, we’d love for the children to see how many groups of 14 they can find at home or outdoors – 14 shells, 14 buttons, 14 steps... get creative!
We ended the week with a lovely visit from our Secret Storyteller. The children loved hearing two new stories that sparked lots of excitement about reading. If you'd like to be a Secret Storyteller and come in to read to the class, please get in touch with us at [email protected]
The children have now been taught all of the Set 2 special friends in phonics. Please continue to support this learning at home. You can watch this short video that introduces the sound ‘oo’ poo at the zoo.
https://schools.ruthmiskin.com/training/view/nktucNl6/6TcEOcKQ Encouraging your child to spot the special friend in a word before sounding it out will really help build their confidence.
Thank you for all the wonderful additions to our Reading Scrapbook. It’s such a great way for children to share their favourite books and develop a love for reading. Please help your child complete one page – it could be a short review, a drawing, a picture of the cover, or even a photo of you reading together. Let your creativity shine and return it in the canvas bag so we can pass it on to the next child.
We love hearing about all the great things the children are doing outside of school. Please keep sending us your good news – big or small – so we can celebrate it together in class. Email us at [email protected]
See you in June,
The Reception Team
