A Wheat-tastic Week in Reception!
We have had a ‘wheat-tastic’ week in Reception! The children have been engrossed in the wonderful story of The Little Red Hen, using the story as inspiration to learn all about Harvest and where our food comes from.
We have been learning about how wheat is grown and harvested, and the children have been fascinated to discover just how many amazing machines are used to harvest the wheat that eventually becomes the bread we enjoy at our snack table. The children were particularly amazed when learning about windmills and their working parts, and we have enjoyed lots of conversations about how things work and why they are useful.
Exploring Bread
As part of our learning this week, we have been exploring different types of bread from around the world. The children enjoyed looking closely at photographs of different breads and talking about their shapes, colours, textures and how they might taste. We even looked at different breads during snack time and talked about the ones we recognised.
On Thursday, the children became bakers for the afternoon! Each child had the opportunity to mix the bread ingredients, add water and knead their own dough before creating their very own bread roll. We were very excited to watch the dough prove in the kitchen and then see our little rolls turn a beautiful golden colour as they baked in the oven. The classroom was filled with the delicious smell of freshly baked bread!
Our Co-op Adventures
We were also very excited to begin our trips to the Co-op this week. The children enjoyed putting on their coats, getting ready for our walk and thinking carefully about what we needed to buy.
While in the shop, the children were on the lookout for different bread items and helped us think about the things we could choose for our snack table. We have enjoyed enhancing our snack this week with raspberries, grapes and natural yoghurt.
We are already looking forward to our next Co-op adventure!
Looking Ahead
We have another lovely week of learning ahead of us as we continue our Harvest theme. We will be finding out more about where our fruits and vegetables grow and learning about how different crops are harvested.
We will also talk more about our Harvest food bank donation, thinking about the importance of helping others and considering how we can support people who may be less fortunate than ourselves. The children have already started bringing in their tins and packets, and we are so grateful for your generous donations.
Phonics
We will continue learning our initial sounds and developing our speedy recall. Please continue to practise these sounds regularly at home — a little practice each day really helps the children to become confident and speedy with their sounds.
We hope you all have a lovely weekend.
As always, please share your good news with us! We love hearing about all the wonderful things the children have been getting up to at home.
Have a lovely weekend,
The Reception Team
