Another wonderful week in Reception! The children are adapting so well to life at St. Luke’s, and it has been lovely to see those new friendships beginning to blossom. The children are becoming increasingly confident with our routines, getting to know one another and developing a real sense of belonging within our Reception family.
Elmer – Celebrating What Makes Us Unique
This week, we have focused on the wonderful story of Elmer. The children have spent the week learning more about themselves and others and thinking about why it is so important to be yourself and never feel that you need to change who you are to fit in with others.
We have had some lovely discussions about our different skin colours, eyes and hair, talking about how every person is unique and special. We have also discussed how, although we may all look different, we are one big school family who look out for one another, care for each other and respect our differences.
The children have engaged in some fantastic conversations as they looked carefully at themselves in mirrors and described their individual features. They then used what they had observed to create their own self-portraits. It has been wonderful to see just how much detail the children are beginning to notice about themselves!

We have also started learning our initial sounds this week! Please refer back to the School Spider email sent earlier this week for a reminder of the sounds we have been learning and, importantly, how we pronounce them.
Your child will also have changed their sharing book this week and will be bringing home some Fred Games.
Fred is a special frog who can only speak in sounds, so we help Fred by putting the sounds together to make a word.
There are two sheets in your child’s reading folder which explain some simple games you can play at home to help your child develop their oral blending skills. Being able to hear and blend sounds together is a huge step in your child’s reading journey, so please spend some time playing these games together where you can.
Next Week – Our Community
Next week, we are excited to begin talking about our community and where we live. The children will be encouraged to talk about their local area and the places they recognise in their immediate environment.
Why not spend a little time exploring your local area together this weekend? You could go for a walk, look carefully at the buildings and places around you, or visit somewhere special in your community.
You could even take a photograph and send it into us! We can show the children in class and see if they can work out where you are.
We are looking forward to another exciting week of learning, exploring and getting to know the wonderful community around us!
