One week to go until Half Term!

Another full week has flown by! The children have been learning so much and are definitely ready for a well-earned rest — just one more week to go until half term!

On Monday, the children were so excited to start learning all about numbers. We began our journey by being introduced to Number 1. The children explored a special box filled with clues and worked together to discover which number they belonged to. We were incredibly impressed with their conversation skills and how confidently they described what they could see.

We then looked at pictures from the world around us showing just one thing and asked the question, “What do you see, and how do you see it?” — a question we’ll continue to use throughout the year to spark discussion about number. When you’re out and about this weekend, why not see what “1” things you can find together?

On Tuesday, we continued our number learning with a shape hunt! The children searched for circles and circular objects in our environment, chatting about all the everyday items that have a circular shape. Why not have a little circle hunt at home too?

Tuesday was also our soup preparation day! The children were so excited to help prepare the vegetables for our very own homemade soup. We learnt all about food preparation, including how to hold a knife correctly and use a chopping board safely. Their skills were fantastic — have a look at the photos below to see them in action!

On Wednesday, it was all about… Soup, soup, soup! The delicious smell drifted all through school as our soup bubbled away in the kitchen. The children learnt about boiling vegetables and how heat makes them soft and ready to be blended together. In the afternoon, we all sat down to taste our creation, chatting about which vegetables we could taste — and, of course, dipping in a lovely breadstick or two!

On Thursday, we stayed on the soup theme but made something a little different — Friendship Soup. The children absolutely blew us away with their ideas about what makes a good friend. We talked about love, happiness, and caring for others, and how it’s important to talk about every feeling.

On Friday, we finished the week by learning about patterns — something the children spot all around them! We looked closely at repeating patterns and were so impressed to see how the children carried this into their independent play, creating their own patterns using colours, shapes, sounds, and even their bodies and instruments.

We can’t wait for another wonderful week of learning ahead, including St. Luke’s Day on Monday. We’ll be walking to church with our buddies to learn all about this special man and why our school is named after him. We’ll also be exploring more about harvest vegetables, especially pumpkins, discovering their amazing features, and reading the beautiful story “Pumpkin Soup.”

Please do keep practising letter formation at home, using the formation phrases from the sheets we have sent home – it really makes a big difference.

This week we have learnt all about v, y, w, z and x in our RWI sessions, if you notice any consistent gaps in sounds please do let us know and we can send you a link for learning at home. Keep revisiting the green words you have at home, remember to encourage your child to “Fred Talk, read the word”.

We can’t wait to see your good news from over the weekend, please email us at [email protected] with news no matter how big or small, we love to see it!

Have a lovely weekend, everyone.

The Reception Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
