Reception Weekly Blog (15.5.26)
Date: 15th May 2026 @ 3:37pm
The end of another wonderful week, one step closer to a little break – which is very much needed! We have had such a busy and exciting week in Reception, full of learning, exploring and new experiences.
On Monday, we introduced two new Experts of the Week. Aubrey shared her love of her new puppy, Milo, and told the children all about an exciting upcoming camping trip. Over in Sand Dunes, Francis taught the children all about his fascination with sea life, especially the octopus! The children loved asking questions and learning from their friends. We also introduced the children to the number 15 this week. They were excited to explore how 15 is made from one ten and five extra ones, as well as discovering where 15 belongs on the number line. Throughout the week, the children independently created number lines in provision and enjoyed finding out which friend was 15th in line.
On Tuesday, we enjoyed a music-filled afternoon. The children learnt all about songs used for celebrations and had the opportunity to learn and play along to the traditional song “Cobbler, Cobbler Mend My Shoe”. The children explored the importance of keeping a steady beat and showed fantastic listening and rhythm skills.
Wednesday was all about life cycles and growing. The children learnt how a sunflower grows and explored each stage of its life cycle. Every child planted their very own sunflower seed in a pot and they are incredibly excited to watch and track its progress over the coming weeks. We also said goodbye to our wonderful teeny tiny tadpoles as they headed back to the pond as froglets – the children were so proud to see how much they had grown.
On Thursday, we continued our learning about octopuses and discovered how they are increasingly being found interacting with or trapped in marine litter such as plastic cups, bottles and fishing nets. Although octopuses are highly intelligent creatures, these discarded items can become dangerous shelters and even deadly traps through entanglement or ingestion. The children showed great curiosity and compassion during our discussions about looking after our oceans and sea creatures.
We are very excited to welcome two more Experts of the Week next week as we begin to wind down for a very well-deserved half term holiday. Please do not forget to send us your good news at [email protected] – we absolutely love sharing and celebrating it with the children.
