Reception Weekly Blog (15.12.23)

Date: 15th Dec 2023 @ 1:38pm

Here we are, wrapping up a wonderful Autumn term in Reception! Our little learners have accomplished so much in just a few short months. We are so proud of their enthusiasm for learning and the curiosity they bring to the classroom every day.

This week, we were treated to a remarkable performance of the Year two ‘Nativity’ – a huge well done to them. We were also lucky enough to experience a wonderfully festive performance from Year three, alongside choir members from the Anglican Cathedral, who sang traditional carols and festive classics, creating a joyous atmosphere in the run up to the holidays!

As we approach the end of term, Reception have been working hard in phonics, to develop strong ‘oral blending’ skills (e.g. combining sounds b, a, t, to say “bat”). Learning to blend sounds, also known as ‘Fred talk’, is a crucial milestone in the early stages of reading. It lays foundations for decoding words and helps children to become prolific readers. ‘I Spy!’ is a fantastic game that you can easily adapt to support oral blending at home. Or, use your phonics flash cards to create simple consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words, and encourage your child to say each sound and then the word.

In Maths, Reception have delved into the concept of “one more” and “one less” this week. We started by gathering building blocks to create towers of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. The children had a blast as they watched a small teddy physically hop along the top, calling out numbers and discovering what happened when we added one more or took one away. Stay tuned for more updates of our mathematical journey, and feel free to try the same activity at home!

Next week, we look forward to playing party games and having fun together during our FOSLS Christmas takeover day on Tuesday 19th December, as well as walking to church with our Year four buddies on Wednesday 20th December, for a Christmas Service led by our friends in Year 1. A reminder that we finish at an earlier time of 2:00pm on Thursday 21st December, and there is no after school club on this day.

Happy blending everybody!

The Reception Team :)

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
