Reception Weekly Blog (13.6.25)

Happy Friday, everyone!

On Monday, we welcomed two new children to enjoy their special week as the "expert in their field." In Sand Dunes classroom, Charlotte taught us all about weddings and how she will prepare to be by Mummy and Daddy’s side as they walk down the aisle… we can’t wait to see the pictures! In Pinewoods, the focus turned to Eva whose special interest was ducklings and how she has been caring for a family of ducks who visit their garden. Both Eva and Charlotte love spending time at the beach, collecting shells whether that is in Ibiza or Cornwall, we have loved chatting all about the different shells we can see on the shore and who may live inside them! We really enjoy exploring each other’s interests, and we can’t wait to learn more when we return on Monday.

We started the week with two very important visitors, we went to the hall in the morning to meet two local police officers who were teaching the children all about being safe outside the house. More importantly how we recognise a stranger and how we can stay safe. We then went into the hall again in the afternoon to talk to a dental educator who spoke to the children about keeping their teeth clean and healthy. Each child took home a brush and paste to keep after we had been shown how to properly brush our teeth.

On Tuesday, we continued to use our Rekenreks in maths. The children have been learning how to make numbers to 10 on their Rekenreks, using the ‘five and a bit way’, where they have 5 red beads at the ready and they show how many more 5 needs to make a certain number e.g. “5 needs 2 to make 7”. Why don’t you have a go at home over the weekend, using your raisins or even cheddars to show how we can make numbers to 10 using 5 and a bit… have fun!

On Wednesday, we met some cute little guests in Year 2… chicks! We were lucky enough to head over to Year 2 to talk about the lifecycle of a hen and carefully observe how the little chicks hatch out of a delicate little egg. Carrying on the theme of life cycles, we were so happy to see that our teenie tiny tadpoles are starting to grow their legs, we have started to give them some spinach to chomp on and they seem very, very happy. The children helped source some clean rocks for the tank, as the tadpoles grow their legs, they need somewhere to practice their climbing skills.

On Thursday, we spent some time making maps! The children loved talking about where they live and how they could follow a map to the beach. We even had a go at searching for school using Google Earth.

We ended the week with a lovely visit from our Secret Storyteller. The children loved hearing two new stories that sparked lots of excitement about reading. If you'd like to be a Secret Storyteller and come in to read to the class, please get in touch with us at [email protected]

The children have now been taught all of the Set 2 special friends in phonics. Please continue to support this learning at home. You can watch this short video that introduces the sound “ar start the car”.
https://schools.ruthmiskin.com/training/view/c4oIwkkf/uvLIPOxB Encouraging your child to spot the special friend in a word before sounding it out will really help build their confidence.

Thank you for all the wonderful entries we’ve seen so far in our Reading Scrapbook. It’s such a great way for children to share their favourite books and develop a love for reading. Please help your child complete one page – it could be a short review, a drawing, a picture of the cover, or even a photo of you reading together. Let your creativity shine and return it in the canvas bag so we can pass it on to the next child.

We love hearing about all the great things the children are doing outside of school. Please keep sending us your good news – big or small – so we can celebrate it together in class. Email us at [email protected]

See you next week,
The Reception Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
