Another week done! It has been a jam-packed but very fun week for British Science Week. We were very lucky to have lots of visitors and guests who helped us learn all about being curious.

On Monday we began with a whole school assembly where we learned from Rosie about what science is. She then spent time with the children in the classroom teaching us all about minibeasts.

We also introduced our new Experts of the Week on Monday. Oliver taught us all about his love of minibeasts and animals, especially assistance dogs and how they help people. In Pinewoods, McLarry taught us about his love of construction and construction vehicles. We were also very lucky to have a visit from John, Gail and their guide dog, Glen, on Monday afternoon. The children learned all about Glen’s job and how he helps John get from A to B as he is blind. The children asked amazing questions and were very kind and caring towards Glen, respecting that he was “at work” and not disturbing him. At the end of the session we were lucky enough to have a gentle stroke of Glen.

On Tuesday we taught the children all about Good Friday. We spoke about the cross and Jesus’ love for everyone. Christians believe that Jesus died to save us from all our wrongdoing and to rebuild our relationship with God. They believe that He came back to life. On Good Friday, Christians believe that God gave all of our sins to Jesus, His only Son, so that our sins could be forgiven forever. Good Friday is a day to remember how powerful forgiving someone can be — a friend, an enemy, or anyone who has made the wrong choice. Because of this, Good Friday is one of the most important dates in the Christian calendar.

On Wednesday, in Sand Dunes we learned more about minibeasts — what types we already know, what we would like to learn more about, and where we might find them. We then took a trip to the garden at the back of the school, where lots of wild flowers are blossoming and buds are starting to appear, to see if we could find any marvellous minibeasts! Over in Pinewoods we began learning about the story of The Three Little Pigs. The children explored different ways of constructing and the different materials we can use to make houses and buildings. They also enjoyed learning about the different vehicles and the roles they play in construction.

On Thursday we continued learning about British Science Week when BIB (Bloom in a Box) came to visit us. They taught us all about reusing plastic and why it is so important to recycle properly so that single-use plastic can be turned into something beneficial rather than ending up in our environment.

Thursday afternoon was lots of fun. In Sand Dunes we enjoyed observational drawing, thinking carefully about what we saw in the garden on Wednesday. Over in Pinewoods we carried out a “Big Bad Hairdryer” experiment, where the children discussed and predicted which materials would make the strongest houses. We used the hairdryer to test our ideas, and the children loved seeing the straw flying around the carpet!

On Friday we enjoyed our mufti day. We also rounded up this week’s maths learning about 3D shapes. The children now know the names of six 3D shapes: the cube, cylinder, cuboid, cone, pyramid and sphere. We have been very impressed with how well the children have remembered the names and properties of these shapes, and we hope you can find some more examples of them at home over the weekend.

Enjoy your weekend, everyone! Please don’t forget to share your good news with us by emailing [email protected] – no matter how big or small, we love to celebrate it with the children.

Take care,
The Reception Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
