Reception Weekly Blog

Wow — we’ve reached the end of another half term! We can’t believe how quickly this academic year is flying by or how much progress the children have made already. We are so proud of everything they have achieved.

This week has been as busy as ever, filled with curiosity and excitement as we continued to explore the children’s interests and the world around us. We were delighted to welcome two new class experts. Delilah shared her knowledge of the magical world of unicorns, and Ivy taught us all about the joy of weddings, baptisms and princesses. The children loved listening, learning and asking thoughtful questions.

On Monday, we introduced the number 10, which created lots of excitement! We have begun exploring number bonds to 10, identifying 10 on a number line, counting forwards to 10 and backwards to 0, and using counters on ten frames to deepen our understanding. In the afternoon, Sand Dunes enjoyed an exciting visit to the library, while Pinewoods learned all about baptisms.

On Tuesday, we began learning about Lunar New Year. Starting on February 17th, 2026, Lunar New Year is a vibrant 15-day spring festival celebrated across many Asian countries. It marks the new moon and the beginning of a new year. It is a special time for families, red decorations for good luck, delicious food, fireworks to scare away the beast Nian, and spectacular dragon and lion dances. We are sad not to be celebrating one of our favourite festivals together in school this year, but we are sure many of you will be celebrating at home — please do send your photos in for us to share!

On Wednesday, we continued exploring Ivy and Delilah’s interests, especially weddings. The classroom was full of wonderful role play, complete with rings, dresses, honoured guests and even a flower girl! In Sand Dunes, the children learned about real-life superheroes — librarians. They designed their own bookmarks and even planned a visit to the school library.

We have also been learning about how flowers grow. After enjoying the story of The Princess and the Pea, we decided to plant our own pea seeds. We are looking forward to observing how they grow and change over time.

On Friday, we had a special treat – our friends from Year 3 headed over to share their fantastic stories as part of their English work. The children amazed us with their reading and writing, we heard such a variety of stories.

The children are certainly ready for a well-deserved rest and recharge. We hope you all have a wonderful half term holiday. As always, please send in your photos — no matter how big or small — to [email protected] We love seeing what you’ve been up to!

The Reception Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
