Reception Weekly Blog

On Monday, we explored the tradition of Christmas trees and discussed why we decorate them. We learned that evergreen trees—symbols of life and hope during the cold, dark winter—were brought indoors to brighten homes and remind people that spring would return. Over time, Christians adopted the evergreen as a symbol of eternal life, and decorating trees with ornaments and lights became the joyful tradition we know today.

On Tuesday, we began designing our very own Christmas trees to feature on beautiful cards for our families. The children were incredibly proud of their creations, each one unique, thoughtful, and personal.

On Wednesday, we enjoyed a wintry walk to church with our buddies, singing festive songs along the way. When we arrived, we were treated to a beautiful Nativity service led by Year 1. They spoke with clarity and sang with such confidence. Inspired by their performance, we returned to school eager to retell the Nativity story ourselves. The children loved dressing up as Mary, Joseph, and the three kings. Pinewoods class also had a special musical treat as Miss O’Neil played her ukulele—we all joined in singing Jingle Bells and We Wish You a Merry Christmas, shaking our bells with great enthusiasm!

On Thursday and Friday, we focused on accurately retelling the story of the First Christmas. Each child had the chance to share their favourite part of the story and reflect on how it made them feel.

This week in maths, we loved getting to know number 7.
The children explored different ways to make 7 and practised showing it in a part–whole model. The children have enjoyed fine-tuning their ‘days of the week’ knowledge and talking about the rainbow we can see in Numberblock number 7.

We look forward to sharing even more festive fun together next week!

Where we will be taking part in the Santa Dash on Monday morning – festive accessories required! On Tuesday it will be Christmas take over day, wear your own clothes and Breakfast with Santa. Along with many more festive treats before term ends on Thursday 2pm.

Today your child brought home their first set of Nonsense words. We used to call these alien words, they are made-up words like "brip" or "stemp" that follow English phonics rules, we practise these to check your child's ability to decode sounds into words, rather than relying on memory or pictures, ensuring they truly grasp their early phonetic skills.

We absolutely love sharing your good news. Please email us at [email protected] with any updates, no matter how big or small – we always enjoy hearing from you.

Have a great weekend,
The Reception Team

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
