Year 1 Home Learning – Week 5 🌟
We have had another lovely week of learning in Year 1! The children have been working really hard on their maths and handwriting skills, and we would love for you to continue supporting these at home.
🔢 Maths
This week in Maths, we have continued exploring less than, greater than and equal to, comparing numbers and developing our understanding of their value.
We have now moved on to number lines, focusing on recognising the numbers, understanding the intervals between them and using number lines to count forwards and backwards.
For this week's home learning, please complete the attached number line worksheet. This will help the children practise identifying numbers, filling in missing numbers and counting jumps along a number line. Encourage your child to look carefully at the intervals and explain how they know where each number belongs.
✏️ Handwriting – Our Jam Sponge! 🍰
We have also been working hard on our handwriting, with a particular focus on letter size and formation.
To help the children remember where their letters should sit on the lines, we have introduced the idea of imagining a jam sponge cake! We encourage the children to keep their letters within the jam between the lines, helping them to form letters that are correctly sized and consistent.
This week's focus letters are o, c and q.
A handwriting practice sheet has been sent home showing the letters we have been learning. Please encourage your child to practise these, paying particular attention to their size and formation. At the moment, correct letter size is our biggest priority, rather than writing lots of letters.
📚 Reading, Spellings and Home Learning Grid
As always, please continue to:

Read daily with your child for around 15 minutes using their Read Write Inc. phonics book. Please record any reading in their yellow reading record.

🌟 Year 1 Home Learning – Week 5 🌟
Dear Parents and Carers,
We have had another busy week of learning in Year 1! Here is this week’s home learning and some of the key skills we would love you to continue practising at home.
🔢 Maths – Comparing Groups
This week in Maths, we have been learning how to compare groups of objects.
The children have been exploring:

Matching objects to compare two groups

Identifying which group has more and which has fewer

Recognising when groups have the same amount

Using the language less than, greater than and equal to
Please complete the Maths home learning activity linked to this week’s learning. You can also practise at home using everyday objects such as toys, buttons, pasta or Lego. Make two groups and ask your child: Which has more? Which has fewer? Are they equal?
✏️ Handwriting
We have also begun our handwriting lessons in Year 1.
Our focus at the moment is on forming our letters correctly and making sure that letters are the correct size in relation to one another. We are also working with the children to address any incorrect letter formation and help them develop good handwriting habits from the beginning.
Please continue to practise letter formation at home, encouraging your child to start each letter in the correct place, form it correctly and think carefully about its size.
Short, regular practice is much more beneficial than completing lots at once!
📚 Phonics & Reading
Please continue to read your child’s Read Write Inc. phonics book every day, including practising their Story Green Words, Red Words and Speedy Green Words.
Around 15 minutes each day is ideal, and rereading the same book is really important for developing fluency, accuracy and confidence.
Please continue to record how your child is getting on in their yellow Reading Record.

Please continue practising this term’s Red Spelling Words, which can be found on the Home Learning Grid.
Little and often is best – practise reading the words, saying them aloud and writing them from memory.

🌟 Year 1 Home Learning – Week 4 🌟
Dear Parents and Carers,
Another week of fantastic learning in Year 1! Here is this week’s home learning.
🔢 Maths – One More, One Less
This week in Maths, we are learning to find one more and one less of numbers from 0–20.
To support this learning at home, the children have been set an assignment on their Doodle account focusing on one more and one less.
Your child’s Doodle login details were sent home last week and are stuck inside their Home Learning Book. Please support your child to log in and complete the assigned activity.
You can also practise this skill throughout the week by choosing a number between 0 and 20 and asking:
“What is one more?”
“What is one less?”
📚 Phonics & Reading
Please continue to read your child’s Read Write Inc. phonics book every day.
Encourage them to practise their Story Green Words, Red Words and Speedy Green Words before reading the story. Remember, repetition is key to developing fluency, so rereading the same book throughout the week is really valuable.
Around 15 minutes of reading each day is ideal. Please continue to record how your child is getting on in their yellow Reading Record.

Please choose another activity from the Home Learning Grid to complete this week. We have loved seeing the children’s home learning so far!

🌟 Year 1 Home Learning – Week 3 🌟
Dear Parents and Carers,
The children have made a fantastic start to their home learning! Their Home Learning Books have now been marked and returned, ready for them to choose and complete another activity from the Home Learning Grid this week.
🔢 Maths
Inside your child’s Home Learning Book, you will also find a Maths worksheet linked directly to the learning we have been doing in school this week.
We have been busy learning how to:
- Sort objects in different ways, such as by colour, shape or type
- Count objects accurately
- Count a given number of objects from a larger group
- Represent numbers using objects and pictures
Please support your child to complete the Maths sheet and stick it into their Home Learning Book. Books should be returned to school by next Wednesday.
Your child has also been set up a Doodle account and you will find their login in their home learning book. Whilst no assignments have been set this week, please feel free to have a go and play around on it. It may ask you to complete a basline, if so, please allow your child to complete this independently as this will form their tasks on the app. Doodle can be accessed on ipads/laptops. If using on an ipad you will need to download the 'Doodle Maths' app. We will share more information on this at Meet the Teacher next week but please don't hesitate to get in touch if any questions.
📚 Phonics & Reading
Your child will also be bringing home the Read Write Inc. phonics book that they have been reading in school.
Please encourage your child to read this book every day, as well as practising their:
- 🟢 Story Green Words
- 🔴 Red Words
- ⚡ Speedy Green Words
If your child finds reading the whole book in one go a little too much, please feel free to break it down into smaller sections across the week. There is no need to read the entire book every evening.
Repetition is key to building fluency and confidence, so around 15 minutes of reading each day is ideal. Even though your child may become very familiar with the story, rereading it helps them to read more smoothly, accurately and with expression.
Please use your child’s yellow Reading Record to let us know how they are getting on at home.

Today, Year 1 have brought home their new Home Learning Books, with the Autumn 1 Home Learning Grid inside. The grid explains the home learning expectations for the next four weeks and is split into two sections:
The top section outlines the tasks we would like your child to complete each week.
The bottom section includes four additional activities. These can be completed at any time that suits your family over the next four weeks.
Reading
This week, your child will not bring home a RWI reading book. We like to pre-teach each story in school before children bring the book home to read with you, so they feel confident and successful when reading it. Your child will bring home their new RWI reading book next Friday.
For this week, please enjoy sharing your child’s new borrow book together each day. You can use the questions listed in the Reading section of the Home Learning Grid to chat about the story and support their understanding.
Maths
This week, your child has also brought home a number formation worksheet. Please support your child to carefully trace over the numbers 0–20, practising the correct formation of each number. Once completed, please glue the worksheet into their Home Learning Book.
When is it due?
Your child’s weekly home learning should be completed by Wednesday each week so that we can mark it and return their Home Learning Book to you on Friday. Your child will receive a stamp in their Stamp Album for any home learning they complete in their Home Learning Book! 🌟
Please ensure your child’s Home Learning Book is placed in their book bag ready to return to school every Wednesday.

4.9.26 Welcome to Year 1! 📚🌟
We would like to say a very warm welcome to Year 1! We hope you all had a wonderful summer and that the children are enjoying their first few days with us. We have loved welcoming them into their new classrooms and getting to know them.
For this first week, we are keeping home learning nice and simple. All we ask is that you enjoy sharing stories with your child at home. Reading together is such an important part of their learning, and at this stage we simply want the children to enjoy books, talk about stories and develop a love of reading. ❤️
Today, the children have brought home their book bags with a 'borrow book' inside. This is a book for you to enjoy and share together. You might like to talk about the pictures, discuss what is happening, predict what might happen next or simply snuggle up and enjoy the story together!
Over the next couple of weeks, we will be sending home a new Home Learning Book and Home Learning Grid, which will explain our home learning expectations and give you lots of ideas for supporting your child's learning at home. More information about reading books and our routines will also follow as the children settle into Year 1.
