Year 5 Blog 5.9.25

Date: 4th Sep 2025 @ 5:33pm

What a fantastic week this has been! It has flown by as we welcomed the students back from their summer break.

We have also welcomed a few new students to our year 5 group who have settled in very well to their new surroundings.

The week started with a host of different activites looking at our expectations for the year and listening to the wonderful things that they had been up to over the summer. We also created class charters to follow in order to make the classrooms a perfect learning environment and to ensure the children can maximise their potential.

Starting with PSHE we looked at things in our lives that we would like to improve upon and then created our Hands Hope display. We will regularly reflect upon these hopes and share how we are progressing.

In maths, we delved into the world of Roman Numerals with a focus on completing questions using mathematical functions.

We began our PE lessons on Wednesday playing dodgeball; improving accuracy and reminding of safe areas to aim for during the games.

In guided reading we looked at Fairtrade and how it helps farmers in countries around the world. This linked to Central America, namely Mexico, as this was one of the countries that the ancient Maya lived and built their powerful cities.

For English, we began our unit of Poetry gauging an understanding of how poems are structured and the impact this has. We also focussed on year 5 worthy decriptive words to improve our own writing.

We are studying the Maya civilisation this half term and the children were introduced to where they lived and when the civilisation began and ceased to be.

The pupils used maps to outline Mayans geographical location as well as comparing this to the Romans and Egyptians, whom they have studied in previous years. For a sense of period, we looked at a timeline to understand when the Mayan period was.

We end the week with glorious sunshine and excitement for the year ahead. Have a fantastic weekend!

From Mr Ryan, Mr Williams and Mrs Devers.

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
