A whirlwind of a week this week. Pardon the pun for the forecast weather this weekend!

We welcomed our Maya visitor (Big Nose) this week.

He brought to life the Maya people way, giving a captivating and highly educational performance throughout the day. The children started their day learning some simple Mayan phrases as well as counting from 1-10. The quiz between 5H and 5R was of particular interest to both classes. Following on, the classes had the opportunity to bring to life their own dramatic scenes. From sacrifices to dancing frogs, they all provided fantastic performances and a great deal of entertainment for the teachers. We also had the chance to explore a host of different artefacts, making educated guesses about their purpose based on visual clues. Finally it was time for the grand crescendo of the Maya creation story. With teacher performances of Qʼuqʼumatz and Tepeu, we had a whislte stop tour through the creation of 4 attempts to create an obedient and weatherproof category of people. Interpretive river dancing led by Mr Ryan seemed to captivate the minds of the children... for some reason.

Outside of the excitement of Wednesday, we have started our new English topic, writing a set of instructions for the Maya game Pok-a-Tok. Each class had the opportunity to play the game with the rules forbidding the use of hands, feet or heads. A challenging game indeed.

Maths continues with place value, moving to rounding at the end of the week.

A positive week all round.

Have a wonderful weekend and we look forward to the next week, especially the Harvest festival!

From,

The Year 5 team.

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
