Year 5 Blog 16.5.25

Date: 16th May 2025 @ 4:07pm

It’s been a pretty hot week and the children have coping with the heat really well.

In maths we have been looking at position and movement and the children have been reflecting shapes using mirrors and grid coordinates.

In English, we have been continuing with our plastic pollution writing topic. Wow! Some of the work has been extremely persuasive with lots of emotive language being used.

In guided reading, the children learnt more about the history of Formby and answered clarification and retrieval questions based on the text.

As part of our history topic, we went on a short walk to visit some local house. The children looked at the features and attempted to date them from what they observed.

Next week, we will be going a little further afield and will be looking at where the old St Luke’s school was located. We will also be looking for other clues as to the history of Formby.

In outdoor games, the children have been improving their skills in the areas of athletics: chest ball push, shot put, standing long, triple and high jumping. Half the class did the throwing skills and the other the jumping, and next week they will swap over.

As part of our DT topic on mechanisms, including pop ups, the children began to learn some techniques. They will learn more over the coming weeks, before choosing which ones they want to incorporate into their York scrapbook.

In computing, we delved further into the power and speed of databases and in music, used music software to experiment with looking and mixing sounds.

Next week is assessment week, which will run alongside our normal curriculum.

Have a happy and safe weekend.

From the Y5 team.

to learn, to succeed, to value one another

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. A value is a belief or principle that guides our thinking and behaviour. Our values underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be happy and confident and to to take an active role in their community and the wider world.

Each year group has adopted one of our Christian values: Kindness, Forgiveness, Courage, Thankfulness, Hope, Faithfulness and Respect. Our over-arching Christian Value is Love. Throughout the year children are helped to explore, have opportunities to practise and then given time to reflect on what each of our Christian values means to them.
